Three-Valued Plurivaluationism of Vague Predicates

چکیده

Disagreeing with Williamson on vagueness, the author proposes a solution that he calls “three-valued plurivaluationism” to the age-old sorites paradox. In essence, it is a three-valued semantics for a first-order language with identity with the additional suggestion that a vague language has more than one correct interpretation. Unlike the traditional three-valued approach to a vague language, the so-called three-valued plurivaluationism, so the author argues, can accommodate the phenomenon of higher-order vagueness. And, unlike the tr`aditional three-valued approach to a vague language, the so-called three-valued purivaluationism, so the author argues, can also accommodate the phenomenon of penumbral connection when equipped with “suitable conditionals”. The author also shows that this three-valued purivaluationism is a natural consequence of a restricted form of Tolerance Principle (TR) and a few related ideas, and argues that (TR) is well-motivated by considerations of how we learn, teach, and use vague predicates.

Comments on Fuzzy Logic and Higher-Order Vagueness by Nicholas J.J. Smith

Smith’s article Fuzzy logic and higher-order vagueness [12] presents a solution to the problem of artificial precision, encountered in the degree-theoretical semantics of vagueness. The solution is based on fuzzy plurivaluationism, which has been discussed in more detail in Smith’s book [11]. Within the degree-theoretical framework, fuzzy plurivaluationism is certainly the appropriate treatment...

Fuzzy Logic and Higher-Order Vagueness

The major reason given in the philosophical literature for dissatisfaction with theories of vagueness based on fuzzy logic is that such theories give rise to a problem of higherorder vagueness or artificial precision. In this paper I first outline the problem and survey suggested solutions: fuzzy epistemicism; measuring truth on an ordinal scale; logic as modelling; fuzzy metalanguages; blurry ...

Modal Semantics for Knowledge Bases Dealing with Vague Concepts

The paper investigates the characterisation of vague concepts within the framework of modal logic. This work builds on the su-pervaluation approach of Fine and exploits the idea of a precisiication space. A simple language is presented with two modalities: a necessity operator and an operatorìt is unequivocal that' which is used to articulate the logic of vagueness. Both these operators obey th...

Nearness relations in environmental space

This paper presents an experiment with human subjects concerning the vague spatial relation ‘near’ in environmental space. After the topic is introduced and relevant previous work surveyed, the experiment is described. Three approaches to experimental analysis are presented and discussed: nearness neighbourhoods as regions with broad boundaries, fuzzy nearness and distance measures, and four-va...

A Probabilistic Framework for Vague Queries and Imprecise Information in Databases

A probabilistic learning model for vague queries and missing or imprecise information in databases is described. Instead of retrieving only a set of answers, our approach yields a ranking of objects from the database in response to a query. By using relevance judgements from the user about the objects retrieved, the ranking for the actual query as well as the overall retrieval quality of the sy...
